THE ROLE OF PERSONALITY AND VALUES IN HUMAN SERVICES PRACTICE
Your personality is a constellation of traits that influence how you think, feel, and behave. For this Journal Assignment, you complete a personality assessment based on Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types. The assessment will provide your scores on four different dichotomies (Kaler, 2007, pp. 676–677):
· Extroversion/introversion: Degree to which you focus on and draw energy from the external world (e.g., people and things) or the internal world (e.g., ideas and concepts).
· Sensing/intuition: Degree to which you focus on concrete information gained from the five senses or abstract information gained from perception.
· Thinking/feeling: Degree to which you base your decisions on rationality and objectivity or values and maintaining harmony.
· Judging/perceiving: Degree to which you prefer resolution or open-ended situations.
You then use the results of the assessment to draw conclusions about which of your personality traits would be particularly useful in a given human services role and which could pose some challenges. You also compare your values to the values associated with the practice of human services.

INFJs make up less than 1% of the population and are considered the rarest personality type.
What is the meaning of INFJ?
The 16 Personality types are made out of of four letters corresponding to a fundamental personality trait for the type. Tailored questions find your combination of four sets of opposing traits—introverted versus extroverted, sensing versus intuitive, thinking versus feeling, and perceiving versus judging. INFJ means Introversion (I), Intuition (N), Feeling (F), and Judging (J) personality traits.
What are INFJs like?
INFJs (Counselors) are altruistic,
sensitive
, and thoughtful individuals with a strong sense of justice and integrity. Above everything else, they strive to find their higher purpose and lead a meaningful life. Idealistic and perfectionistic, at their best, Counselors not only dream of making a difference in the world but also take action to make it happen.
INFJs are highly empathetic, and their unique insight and worldview often inspire positive change in people around them. Although they carefully choose whom they open up to, they possess a gift for making others feel heard and understood. However, while they’re highly aware of other people’s emotions, they often find it difficult to understand their own feelings.
Since INFJs seek meaning and purpose in life, they can feel like outsiders in society: after all, they aren’t impressed by appearances, luxury, and the like. Their compassion and wish to leave a mark in the world often cause them to advocate for various social issues, and it isn’t unusual for INFJs to dedicate their lives to a particular cause.

Compassion and sensitivity
The INFJ is characterized by deep compassion, sensitivity, and an ability to “read” others. Rather than watching other people’s reactions from the outside, people who have this personality type sometimes report they can genuinely feel other people’s emotions. They may even have trouble focusing on their own feelings and needs when they’re around other people.
Gauging the mood of a group and responding appropriately is second nature to the INFJ, and in some situations, the INFJ might even look more like a social butterfly than an introvert. Don’t be fooled: despite their general attunement to others, INFJs need their alone time. It also takes time before they truly trust someone and let them in.
Insight
The INFJ’s intuition doesn’t just extend to people: this enigmatic type has sometimes been called “The Mystic” for their almost uncanny ability to accurately assess a situation and predict what might happen. INFJ’s logical and feeling sides work together, leading them to perceive patterns in other people’s behavior and in the world around them that other people don’t see, which allows them to come to perceptive conclusions.

In general, INFJs are very aware they are part of a bigger picture. This personality type sees themselves as “part of the main” of humanity rather than an island. Other people getting along and leading lives that are both happy and fulfilling is very important to them. When INFJs do go against the grain and challenge other people’s perspectives, creating

, happiness, and a better life for those around them is a main motivation.
Imagination and idealism
INFJs, like other intuitive types, frequently have rich and
powerful imaginations
. As one of the most reserved and sensitive personality types, they may feel uncomfortable opening up to people and sharing their ideas, particularly to people they don’t know. But when they do, they are capable of articulating revolutionary ideas and producing amazing creative work.
Logic and determination
Whether it’s a piece of art, scientific research, a plan to start a charity, or a vision for a better society, INFJ people often pay painstaking attention to details. The INFJ is decisive, analytical, and capable of producing organized thought. Like other J personality types, this personality type craves structure and order.
Once this personality type has decided exactly what they are working towards, they will work tirelessly to turn their visions into action. Their unique mixture of logic, quiet idealism, people skills, and tenacity can even lead them into leadership positions as they work hard to make their ideas reality. It’s unlikely they’ll be hogging the spotlight, but INFJs can be found influencing events behind the scenes.
