Opioids have become easily accessible to individuals. Deaths that have resulted from opioid overdoses have increased throughout the years and continue to grow. I am writing to you, to take action and address the opioid epidemic within our state before we can move forward to address this issue at a much higher level. In the hospital setting we treat a vast number of individuals and the majority are individuals with a lower socioeconomic status who are also at a higher risk for becoming opioid dependent. It’s crucial that as a state we implement interventions that will help reduce the opioid epidemic within our state. Financially, pharmaceutical companies will be greatly affected, but the lives of individuals are most important, not the production of a potential harmful substance. It’s unethical to not treat a patient’s pain properly, but implementing other interventions first to help treat a patient’s pain should occur before resorting to opioids. It can become difficult as a nurse to help care for patients with opioid addictions because their high tolerance for pain medication means nurses can’t effectively treat the patient’s pain. Most often these individuals have to be withdrawn from controlled substances in the hospital and when they leave, they may resort to using opioids again. Opioid addiction can be prevented if other pain measures and interventions are utilized first. Utilizing non-opioid interventions for pain management, implementing prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) in all healthcare facilities to effectively monitor patients, better screening for who requires opioid prescriptions, carefully managing the type of opioid, implementing an opioid contract, restricting healthcare professionals to the amount and type of medication they prescribe are all different interventions that can be used to help. I appreciate the time you have taken to read my letter. I look forward to your response in the next few weeks regarding a solution to this issue. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Your Name, Title
