RUAwk3paper-2.docx 1 2 Rua Topic Search Strategy Student name Chamberlain University College of Nursing 449 Evidence Based Practice Cynthia Butterman Due Date RUA Topic Search Strategy The focus of this paper is to identify a problem selected by our group and show its significance. The focus of this group is to identify how parents of children with cancer apply self-care and coping mechanisms to their day-to-day life, to begin healing from the situation they find themselves in. According to a National Library of Medicine article, parents who utilize some sort of social support experience a decrease in stress in both them and their child (Melguizo-Garín et al., 2022). Parents who utilize group or family therapy tend to have increased health outcomes because not only are they helping themselves to reduce stress, but they are building coping mechanisms to help deal with the disease of their loved one. In a study performed by the University of Rzeszow in Poland, statistics shows that 53% of the parent’s experience exhaustion due to the inability to take time for themselves and practice self-care (Lewandowska, 2021). Learning stress reducing techniques, having psychological assistance, and coping mechanisms not only help parents but it can also help the rest of the family while dealing with this difficult process. The topic for our group is self-care and coping mechanism. The PICOT (patient, intervention, comparison, outcome, and time) question our group created is (P)In families/parents dealing with children with cancer (I) how does support group therapy (C) compared to non-standardized self-care influence (O) coping mechanism (T) over 5 years. This picot question supports our topic and properly answers the question in detail about how parents cope and the need for self-care. The purpose of this paper is to research a topic and answer our picot question in detail. It will provide evidence on how parents with children with cancer are in need of group therapy compared to parents who do not receive it and how self-care not only help parents but the entire family circle in one. Levels of Evidence The goal of this paper is to identify the type of question that is being asked or more specifically what the PICOT question is. The question centers around the importance of the use of coping mechanisms and self-care when coming to terms with your child being diagnosed with cancer. Terminal illnesses like cancer are life changing both to the person that is diagnosed but also to their family. Learning how to come to terms with and move forward after hearing the news is difficult for everyone involved. Parents may find that they are unable to balance their work schedules and finances, while also being supportive and present for the rest of their family. The National Cancer Institute offers some self-care tips for families that have had someone receive a cancer diagnosis. Taking the time to check in on spouses, going out to dinner with friends, or attending a support group can help parents to realize that they are not alone and in term help them to build the strength necessary to face the circumstances. | Being involved in social settings helps to create and find communities that can support you through the process ( Support for Families When a Child Has Cancer, 2018). The National Cancer Institute has both online and in person support groups to create an accessible channel that serves to counsel and support families facing similar situations ( Support for Families When a Child Has Cancer, 2018).| A study perform by the PIADI Group in Spain shows that parents who involve themselves in group therapy and social settings have a reduction in stress ( Melguizo-Garín et al., 2023). The evidence showcased by the result of the study conducted by the PIADI Group, Junta de Andalucia, Spain proved that parents who received and utilized self-care, strategies, coping mechanisms, and frequented social settings were better able to comprehend, digest, and continue forward after receiving the news when compared to their counterparts who did not behave similarly (Melguizo-Garín et al., 2023).| Families who received support from their communities, families, friends, and health care staff were found to experience reduced stress level and an increase in their life satisfaction compared to families who did not receive the same support (Melguizo-Garín et al., 2023). Search Strategy The list of search terms used was broad as the chosen topic revealed that there was plenty of research about coping mechanisms and self-care strategies amongst parents with children diagnosed with cancer. The search term was social support for parents who have children with cancer (Melguizo-Garín et al., 2023, Melguizo-Garín et al., 2022). This research began in Chamberlain University library with the search producing 2708 results of articles that were peer reviewed and published between 2018 and 2023. Other databases and search engines used were google which led to the National Cancer Institute. The articles from Chamberlain University that lead to National Library of Medicine contain information which directly correlates and supports the research and provides answers to the PICOT question (Melguizo-Garín et al., 2022, Melguizo-Garín et al., 2023). In the beginning of my research, I had to refine my search to find the most appropriate articles. I used search terms that were direct and concise to ensure I would find articles that directly correlated to the topic of this paper. I noticed that when I used different types of search terms, I could not find the proper articles for the research in question. As the research continued, I realized that based on the search terms, you may not find the specific articles need it, which I used the term above to refine my search. By using the search term that found the proper articles I was able to expand my research and have more articles to choose from and have a broader search. There were no limits to the search. The two most relevant articles within five years were both found at Chamberlain University using ProQuest and PubMed online (national library of medicine) (Melguizo-Garín et al., 2023, Melguizo-Garín et al., 2022). Conclusion To conclude, this paper describes a research criterion that allows to express the focus of the group, explain the significance of the problem, offer statistics and health outcome. It also includes the PICOT question and states the purpose of the paper. It also provides evidence that supports the answers to the PICOT question. Finally, it explains the search strategy and the resources used. It lists the database and the sources used to provide evidence for this paper. This paper also focusses on the problem and the self-care and coping mechanism for parents with children with cancer. References Lewandowska, A. (2021).
